Fire Prevention - Wood Recycling
R Plevin & Sons Limited was fined £200,000 and ordered to pay £30,000 in prosecution costs linked to a breach of permit conditions and a failure to put in place systems to prevent or minimise risk of fire in stockpiles of waste wood.
Despite earlier warnings raised by the regulator a fire broke out due to self-combustion of waste wood stockpiles. With the fire lasting almost 2 weeks South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service described the incident as being one of the most major resource commitments in recent times.
The offending was characterised as deliberate and allegedly involved pollution of a local river and temporary closure of a sewage treatment works. Smoke allegedly affected homes 20 miles away in Sheffield! (see Guidance on Fire Prevention Plans here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/fire-prevention-plans-environmental-permits).
