Future Relationship Between the UK and the EU - Road Transport

On Friday at 11pm, the UK finally left the EU after over 3 and a half years of uncertainty. So now that Brexit has happened, what will happen to the road transport sectors? How will their business in the EU be affected? What are the Government's plans for the sector?

On Monday, some of these questions were answered after a statement was released that sets out the proposed approach to the negotiations with the EU, regarding the UK and EU's future relationship.

According to the statement, it is certain that by the end of 2020 the transition process will be completed and the UK will have recovered it's full economy and political independence.

The statement then goes on to say that the Government will endeavour to achieve a balanced agreement that works favourably for both sides and reflects shared interests between the UK and EU.

Later in the statement, in an area covering the Government's plans for a Free Trade Agreement, there was a brief statement regarding the plans for Road Transport operations between the UK and EU.

The short statement says: 'There should be reciprocal commitments to allow EU and UK road transport operators to provide services to, from and through each other’s territories, with associated rights, underpinned by relevant international agreements and commitments, and ensuring the necessary cooperation on monitoring and enforcement.'

The statement, of course, mentions that more information and details of the trade agreements will be confirmed in time. But for now we understand that the Government is approaching negotiations with the EU with the aim to produce a positive result for road transport operators both in the UK and EU through a new Free Trade Agreement.
